Hurricane Irene Weakens As It Travels East (The Daily Comet)
A weakening Hurricane Irene continued its slow eastward path across the open Atlantic early Wednesday, forecasters said. The Category 1 hurricane had top sustained winds near 85 mph, and was moving east at about 8 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. It remained a threat only to shipping.
